Moozhiyar Dam

Moozhiyar Dam, located near the Kakki Reservoir in the forest-rich region of Ranni, Pathanamthitta, is a significant hydro-infrastructure site in Kerala. Nestled deep within the lush greenery of the Western Ghats, the dam offers a tranquil setting surrounded by undisturbed nature, making it a serene and lesser-known destination for eco-tourists and nature enthusiasts. It lies close to the famed Gavi eco-tourism zone, adding to its scenic appeal.
The dam is an integral part of the Kakkad Hydroelectric Project. After water is utilized in the Kakkad Power Station for electricity generation, it is released into the Moozhiyar Reservoir, highlighting the dam’s essential role in managing the state's water resources. The flow and operation are meticulously controlled to ensure optimal performance of Kerala’s power grid.

Additionally, the Upper Moozhiyar Dam was constructed as part of the Sabarigiri Augmentation Scheme. This earthen dam across the Moozhiyar River in Seethathodu forms a vital component of the Sabarigiri Hydroelectric Project, Kerala’s second-largest hydroelectric project. The strategic placement of these dams ensures sustainable power generation while also preserving the surrounding forest ecology and supporting water conservation.
